2/10th London of 175 Brigade, 58th Division, moved into the front line at Bullecourt, south of Arras, on 7th June, 1917. They remained here for a week in relatively peace until the final day of their stay. In the early hours of 14th June a raid was carried out on the German front line opposite their trenches. The Battalion Diary emphasises the achievements, two prisoners and two machine guns captured, another machine gun put out of action, but it understates the heavy casualty list that resulted. Twelve men were either killed and missing and another thirty eight wounded out of the sixty officers and men who comprised the raiding party. A heavy price to pay. One of those killed was Jacob Albert. |
